Assessment & Diagnosis
You may be worried if you’ve noticed changes in your teen or if they show signs of anxiety and depression. When you’re looking for answers, our team is here to help. Our first step is a comprehensive mental health assessment so we can identify the challenges and mental health diagnoses your teen may be experiencing. The evaluation will determine the level of care required for your teen and provide information to our treatment teams concerning their specific requirements.
We are a Joint Commission-accredited mental healthcare provider, and we employ proven assessment methods to identify your teen’s mental health issues. The examination typically takes just over an hour and can be conducted in person or virtually. Your teen will then be enrolled into one of our group treatment programs or referred to an alternative provider following the consultation.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Group treatment programs can be vital in helping your teen heal and learn skills for the future. At our Fairlawn, Ohio treatment center only 15 minutes from Akron, we provide group partial hospitalization programming and evidence-based therapies to help patients manage their complex conditions. Some of the treatments we offer are:
- Psychiatry
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Family therapy
- Experiential therapy
- Additional specialized services if needed
We found that frequent, long-term therapy has lasting results and helps your child build new coping strategies to manage their problem. Starting a PHP is a promise to maintain long-term wellness at a time in young people’s lives when they are flexible and adaptable. You can rely on your teen to make rapid progress in a short time. We encourage our patients to actively participate in group discussions by listening carefully and adding their own thoughts so they can enjoy the greatest benefits.
Additionally, our PHP staff coordinates academic services with your teenager’s school to maintain wellness and provide support during their transition back into the school environment.
What to Expect in our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Our PHP is a comprehensive mental health treatment program that lasts six hours each day, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. During this time, your family may get support in the form of family sessions and weekly phone conversations to inform you about your teen’s development. We provide 25 hours of group therapy, one hour of individual therapy, and one to two appointments with a nurse practitioner each week in our PHP.
The goal of a PHP is often to step down to an intensive outpatient program (IOP), which is considered a lower level of behavioral health care. A PHP is ideal for patients requiring moderate to high levels of mental healthcare, have difficulty maintaining their day-to-day activities at home, work, and school, but are not at risk of harming themselves or others.
PHP treatment usually occurs over six to eight weeks. This time may be shorter or longer, depending on your teen’s progress in therapy. Each week, they will meet with a therapist and have their medication managed by a specialist. At Beyond Healthcare, we closely monitor whether patients are meeting the benchmarks set at the beginning of therapy and keep parents updated about any changes in their teen’s condition.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
After-school IOP, sometimes called day treatment sessions, take place three days a week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday) for three hours each session (4 p.m.- 7 p.m.). IOPs are usually made up of eight to twelve teens and are directed by age. Intensive outpatient programming, which includes mental health support for school, therapy sessions, and medication management if required, is meant to help your teen balance academics with socializing, family commitments, sports activities, and other responsibilities. An IOP is suited for patients with moderate mental health symptoms who do not self-harm or have suicidal tendencies.
The IOP typically lasts six to eight weeks, depending on how quickly your teenager advances. IOP is generally a less time-consuming level of care than PHP, and we will keep you informed as we go. In addition to attending group IOP sessions at Beyond Healthcare, your teen also has the opportunity to receive individual therapy services and specialized family counseling. This way, families can participate in therapy sessions during the IOP so they improve communication and resolve common problems together.
Medication Management
If medication is appropriate for your adolescent, we’ll work to create a treatment strategy that you’re comfortable with and that follows accepted medicine administration guidelines. It’s not always easy to decide whether or not to give your teen medicine, which is why our staff will take the time to explain the advantages and risks of each one and provide you time to make an informed decision for your family.
We not only provide support and resources for parents dealing with mental health issues, but we also aim to help them make informed decisions about necessary medications. Our goal is to help everyone under our care reach a state of healing.
Virtual Therapy
We understand that every family is different, so we want to give parents the option to choose what type of treatment works best for their teen. If virtual counseling sessions are right for your teen, we’ll help you access care from wherever you are. Virtual therapy may include IOP groups, medication management assistance, or individual therapy.
